Under its new General Director Serge Dorny, the Bavarian State Opera, including its ballet and orchestra, is undergoing a profound transformation. The aim is to reorient not only the individual companies but the institution as a whole, and its place in the city.
This open, democratic approach is reflected in the new identity we developed: a technically precise and deliberately minimal design that acts as a stage on which content can unfold freely. All typographic information moves to the edges of the format, leaving room for images, ideas and change.
Neue Haas Grotesk is used in a single weight across all formats, without any further emphasis such as bold or italics. This consistency underlines the house’s democratic and international outlook.
The reduced design language and a shared set of layout principles apply to opera, ballet and orchestra alike. Together they form a clear umbrella for all three divisions, creating a sense of belonging and a unified institution.
Each season is assigned its own colour, derived from its theme. Ballet premieres are represented by colour gradients, opera premieres by solid fields of colour. This colour system runs through posters, publications and banners, giving the institution a distinctive and expressive presence throughout the city.
The work went far beyond the rebranding itself. Throughout the year, we oversaw the identity in day-to-day use, ensuring coherence and consistency across every print and digital format, from season brochures and programme books to posters, banners, the website and social media.
